Check the your ranking and traffics drop dates to know if it is penguin or panda or something else

If the traffic drop date falls on 24 April 2012, your website is most likely to be hit by penguin. You should be fixing your link profile.

Penguin update is about web spam. if the traffic drop falls on any of these date, you should check all your back links and clear the ones that can be considered as spam. You should also be checking the quality of your anchor texts

Panda is about content quality. Check your content marketing efforts if you see traffic drops in the following dates.

The panda update focuses mainly on the quality of the content within your website as well as the quality and nature of the content marketing strategies which you have been using. if the traffic drop coincides with any of the dates mentioned in the panda algorithm update calendar, you need to check the quality of the content within your website along with clearing up the poor quality content published on third-party sites, linking back to you, you should also remove links to your site from content sites flagged by the panda update.

If the drop traffic doesn't coincide with any of these dates, it is not likely the panda or penguin update.

this is a most important factor. your anchor text shouldn't be misdirected. if "read more" is used to link back to your website, the page linked must have more information as promised
